if anyone has a list of Luftwaffe Leica IIIC serial numbers, please message/email me. I have a IIIC with an asterisk serial number that I think is a factory rebuilt Luftwaffe camera.

You know it’s Zooey D cute and all, quoting Belle & Sebastian “color my life with the chaos of trouble” … But really a shame that no one says anything about the next line “ANYTHING’S BETTER THAN POSH ISOLATION.” - which to my point about the actualities of my life/photography last night actually says a lot….

I'm beginning to think the whole point of social media (I want to single out Tumblr, but Twitter comes to mind as well) is just to be clever; a continual stream of one-liners. Why does anyone care?

Background can be blurred with the proper amount of spherical aberration. So if you introduce aberration into a lens on purpose, you can actually make the background drift away into a creamy blur, rather than into a series of ever expanding Fresnel patterns. However, that goes against the qualities needed for an astronomical lens where sharpness at focus is paramount. Therefore to get that creamy...

is it bad that after watching 2.5 seasons worth of Portlandia in the last 48 hours I’m already having to consciously stop myself from blurting out “BUT NOT IN PORTLAND” while listening to people talk about how something is absurd or isn’t doable or whatever?

I’m really sick of hearing photographers talk about this lighting rig is better than that lighting rig when they wouldn’t know what to do with something as basic as a Vivitar 283 if it hit them in the face.

wyoh: frankpetroniophotographer: wyoh: Would the porn blogs please just fuck off! You can make an unlimited number of blogs here, why blend everything in one big meaningless puddle of filfth. I’m tired of this shit! Cute… it’s only a matter of taste that differentiates wyoh from the more pedestrian porn blogs. No, it’s a matter of context. I have another blog for my...

I’m contemplating switching to Agfa Precisa 100 CT for color film exclusively. We shot a test roll of it at my shop and it’s super sharp with excellent color rendition. Frankly when I saw it the first thing I thought was “this is re-branded Provia 100F,” and apparently the internet thinks so too. I’m really excited about this and am going to buy a few rolls next...

Can we clarify that just because something is nude, beautiful, and not pornographic does not necessarily make it “art.”

it will be interesting to hear what people have to say about the current film photography fad in15-20 years. I wonder how long this will keep up for. no one seems to have solid arguments for shooting film; it all seems purely reactionary. is that good or bad?

Frank Petronio photographer: The fucked up thing... →
The fucked up thing about the internet is that some amateur Model Mayhem dude who does B&W photos of strippers in Southeastern Bumfuck can have a larger online presence than the masters he attempts to copy, i.e. Paolo Roversi or Irving Penn. Of course he probably doesn’t know who Roversi or Penn are, he’s just copying some hipster doofus. It’s like reflecting a freaking mirror into a...

//rant// Just so we’re all clear - there are actual reasons why telephoto and long focus lenses have white painted tubes. Yes, on one hand it is to stabilize the expansion and contraction of the optical elements (this makes a difference for fluorite lenses, certainly, but ED lenses DO expand and contract as well)… Additionally the white tube, by not absorbing heat like a black...

I did the most cathartic thing I think I’ve done in awhile as a photographer last night. I got out my slide projector and actually looked at the slides I’ve shot recently. Looking at them, without straining yourself over a light table with a loupe, without the buzz of a computer and the endless distractions that come along with it - just the images enveloping a wall in my dark room...

Little Brown Miscellanea: The Eggleston Question →
littlebrownmushroom: Thanks to everyone that sat through my lecture in Portland. Not unlike juggling on a treadmill, it was a bit of a nerve-wracking experiment. One of the things discussed in the lecture was the question I recently posed to William Eggleston. Yesterday Eggleston’s reply was published: Alec Soth: A few years ago Robert Frank said, “There are too many images, too many...
